[He sounds interested. And he takes that as a cue to walk on over and find a seat somewhere. Tell him all about it.]

Something like that. 'Cleanup crew', technically.

You're gonna have to elaborate on that.

[He just gestures to his sword.]

For cleaning up the 'mess' the group didn't want.

[he snorts, a little incredulously.]

And they hired you? A killer? You're shitting me.

[woops, language.]

[Like he cares.]

'Hired' is a strong word. 'Grabbed to make sure I didn't cause damage and anti-mutant sentiment' is more like it.

[He shrugs.]

My father ran the group. He took the one person that I cared about from me. So I did the same to him, except the only person he cared about was himself. It didn't go over well so I... left. It's hard to catch someone who can run circles around you before you can blink.

[Petre laughs, lightly. That's amusing enough to hear about - they'll really do anything, won't they.]

Oh, daddy issues. [Isn't that just precious.] I love issues.

He was my brother too.

[Yeeeep. That sure is a thing. He doesn't really care, though.]

[There is absolutely no sympathy in the way his lips stretch, head shaking softly.]

Doesn't matter. It didn't really change anything.

It never does.

[He could care about the people that died back in that church, all burned alive, and it wouldn't change anything either. What's done is done, and he accepts that the way it is.]

What about you? What's your story?

Oh, you know. [He leans his head on a closed fist, looks off like he's talking about today's weather, sighing softly.]

Family died in a fire. I survived. Can't remember a single thing. The usual.

Sounds rough.

[That's what you're supposed to say, right?]

It does, doesn't it.

[He arches his brows, looks back. Then he just shrugs.]

[He shrugs, too.]

So why are you here? You don't seem like the academic type.

Surviving a fire got their attention, apparently. That and having no home.

I guess.

Any plans for college?

[He doesn't. But he never did.]

Not a single one. I've only had one year to figure out what I like. And so far none of it's been academic. Like you said.

Take your time. Don't let people tell you what you should do about that. Not everyone needs to go.

[Oh. Was that genuine, well-meant advice? Petre could laugh in his face, but he actually doesn't. Maybe he'll never believe anyone here will ever really care about him. Maybe it's just something else entirely.]
