[Okay, now he's laughing too. That strange, almost companiable laughter they sometimes share for a few seconds.]

Good. [he palms his chest, like that was a genuinely touching compliment. Which it was] I'd be offended if you did.

[God, that's something he can actually hear himself saying in response to the same comment. He's smiling, genuine and almost warm, before he can stop himself.

And then there's a teacher poking his head in, getting one look at Petre and telling him to get to the infirmary or the kitchen for some ice. John is in no way excused, and the teacher stays in the room, making it clear that another lecture is imminent.]

[he doesn't leave without a sense of victory in his smile, be it because John's staying behind for Petre's dark eye, or because he actually got that laugh out of him. His eyes don't actually leave him until he's close to the door, almost looking straight through the back of the teacher's head. A mark of his own for John to remember him by.

Right. Time to think about somebody else for the rest of the evening, then.]
