[Ryan wrinkles his nose, rolling his shoulders to try to work some of the nervous tension out of them.]

And it's loud enough without trying to listen in on people's thoughts. Not really a habit of mine.

So, what's it like? A busy restaurant where no one will listen to what they're saying?

Sort of, yeah. I don't always overhear things, just when they're thinking too loud or especially emotional-- so with people being nervous about being here and classes and everything? Kinda hard to sleep.

[He shrugs one shoulder- sleeping on a common room sofa is usually enough distance, it works out.]

At least you're quieter than a lot of people I've run into.

Hah. You must get little kids in your head all the time. That's gotta feel creepy. Do you feel like a creep when you listen to the little guys?

[Petre is an asshole, in case you haven't noticed.]

Not really? It's kinda interesting, actually, the way they think when they're still really imaginative. I figure trying to poke around in anyone's head would feel weird, though.

[He's used to that kind of comment, by now. Any offense is brushed off in favour of curiosity as Ryan peers at him.]

You've gotta have something, there isn't anybody who just doesn't think.

Haven't you heard? I'm practically a blank slate. The only life I remember is th time I've spent here.

So what would I think about?

[He definitely hasn't heard, the worried look on his face makes that clear enough.]

...anything. You don't have to have all your memories to think-- I mean, don't you think about how to answer things, or what you want to do, or have opinions on anything?

Where's the fun in getting all the answers preemptively? Let them have a little mystery. That's how I like it.

...yeah, I guess I can kind of get that. It's just not something you hear very often, you know?

[Ryan's still sort of wrapping his head around that answer, biting his lip. Honestly, it sounds a bit like he might be avoiding the subject, but if that's the case-- well, he's not the type to question it or try to pry too hard.]

How long have you been here, anyway?

About the same. Enough time to get used to it, not enough to know what I'm doing yet.

[That smile's a little bit self-deprecating, but meant in a joking sort of way.]

[he lifts both hands, smacks himself on the back of the left one.

[That makes his smile break into a brief little laugh, if a silent one- just sort of a huff of air, really- and he takes Petre's hand without much hesitation.]

Ryan Farrow.

[His grip's not especially weak or strong, and he keeps it brief before letting go (unless Petre doesn't. he'll probably just go along with that.)]

I didn't really get out much last year, that's probably why. Little too busy trying to deal with the mutation thing.

So. [retracting his hand, he runs it through his hair.] Top five weirdest things you've ever picked out of someone's head.

[And he's going to have to think about that, because there's a lot he's overheard since he became a telepath.]

Guy at the museum had a thing for dinosaurs, that's definitely on the list. Ran into somebody thinking about how bread's part of a conspiracy, there was another guy who was deathly afraid of tiny dogs... god, I don't know, there's been enough that it's hard to pick out specific weird stuff.

The sex-related ones are the most hilarious, aren't they?

[and possibly the most disturbing. who cares about people being afraid of tiny dogs.]

Do they ever get mixed up with your own thoughts? [hm.] What do they sound like?

Depends on how many there are and whether I'm paying attention.

[He shrugs slightly.]

Usually they sound like whoever thought them, but if there are too many to listen to all of them they all just sort of... blend together, I guess? Hard to keep track of what's coming from where, so- yeah, they get a little mixed up sometimes.

[Just like in a busy classroom where no one will shut up even when the teacher tries to get their attention. Interesting.

Hell to live with, but interesting.]

Not yet. I think I could start filtering it out if I had more control, but- kind of a work in progress. Right now there's no off button.

[It's honestly the most frustrating part. Crowds can be blocked out, there's earplugs and everything, but thoughts in your head? No way.]

[he narrows his eyes, looking at him from head to toe.]

Maybe all you need is a proper distraction; that's all.

[He's not sure what to make of that look, head slightly tilted as he peers curiously back.]

...like what? I've tried listening to other things, but it all just goes right past audio.

That's like trying to put fire out with more fire, Ryan.

[That makes him freeze up. There's the same deer-in-the-headlights look, his thoughts racing; sure, there are people he finds attractive, but liking them implies he's actually talked to any of them.

He was pretty serious about not being social until recently.

--no, there was one. Ryan's thoughts don't come as words this time but as images, memories, not meant to be broadcast but difficult to stifle. Falling into the fountain after being startled by a jet of fire, a little teasing and banter, elbowing John in the side for comments about his height. Hands in his hair, playing with it.

And while he's on that 'attractive people' train of thought- yeah, there's definitely a flicker or two of Petre's face as well. Whoops.]

[Which is a poor lie after those unintentional images, but as far as he's concerned it's pretty true. He hasn't really gotten to know people yet, it doesn't count.]

Ryan. [he sounds a little shocked, a little taken aback by the surge of images rather than sounds.] You're a really shitty liar. But at least you have a libido, so that makes you less of a freak.
